Finnish Mining Delegation Meets Chilean Top Management at Embassy Seminar
A Finnish mining delegation led by Pentti Noras (GTK) held a top-management meeting at the Residence of the Finnish Ambassador in Santiago, hosted by Ambassador Ilkka Heiskanen. Senior Chilean representatives from the Ministry of Mining, SERNAGEOMIN, Barrick Chile, Antofagasta Minerals, Los Pelambres, El Tesoro, Minera Las Cenizas, JR Ingeniería, Proter, and Cygsa joined the session, together with Finnish companies including Spinverse, Sleipner, Ruukki, Sandvik Finland, Flowrox, and the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited Minera Las Cenizas, a mid-sized copper producer operating underground mines in Cabildo and Taltal with an annual output of 7,000 tons of copper cathodes.
The day concluded with a high-level dinner hosted by Antofagasta Minerals, Chile’s largest private copper producer, with operations exceeding 700,000 tonnes of copper per year.
Delegation leader Pentti Noras underscored the importance of the exchange:
“Finland and Chile have many similarities in their industrial sectors, and mining is an important link between our countries. We hope to learn from Chile’s remarkable growth and share Finland’s mining success story, including the challenges we face. This visit also supports our bilateral cooperation agreement at both private and public levels.”
Environmental innovation was a central theme. Harry Sandström from Tekes highlighted:
“Finland seeks to become the global leader in Green Mining by 2020. We have learned from past mistakes, and sustainable development now guides our sector. Chile and Finland also share challenges in balancing tourism and mining in the same region.”
The Finnish delegation included senior representatives from Flowrox, Normet, Sandvik Finland, and Ruukki (Optim & Raex).
Flowrox emphasized the close ties between both countries:
“We were delighted to host the Chilean delegation in Finland, and now we are excited to visit Chile and learn something orgullosamente chileno—like Pisco Sour.”
Normet noted the strong engagement shown during earlier meetings:
“We were impressed by how active the Chilean delegation was and how detailed their questions were. It was clear we wanted to continue and visit Chile.”
Ruukki’s Vice President Panu Pitkänen added:
“It was gratifying to see how well prepared and interested the Chilean delegation was. We look forward to meeting companies on their home ground and intensifying our business relationship through our network in Chile.”
