Chilean Forestry Giants Visited Finland on a Sawmill Safari – Featured on the Front Page of Lignum Magazine (08/2012)
The Sawmill Safari 2012 brought a Chilean delegation of key sawmill industry representatives to Finland to explore modern sawmilling technologies, efficiency improvements, and business collaboration opportunities. The visit was designed to support capacity growth, modernization efforts, and international market expansion for Chilean sawmill companies.
Industry Representatives:
- CMPC – A major forestry company with a $1.7 billion turnover, operating in Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay. CMPC owns 700,000 hectares of forest and produces 900,000 m³ of timber annually. Their goal was to renew outdated sawmill machinery.
- Radiata del Maule – A joint sawmill company of eight firms with a 141,500 m³ annual capacity. They sought inspiration for increasing efficiency and were evaluating the potential consolidation of their seven sawmills into one modern facility.
- Arauco – One of the largest forestry companies in Latin America, with a $4 billion turnover. Arauco operates in Chile, Argentina, Brazi, and Uruguay, owning 1.6 million hectares of forest. The company produces 2.8 million m³ of timber annually and sought insights into advanced sawmilling technologies.
