Uruguay’s First CLT Plant: Explores Finnish Expertise

The first CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) plant in Latin America will soon begin operations in Uruguay, marking a significant milestone for the region’s wood construction industry. Additionally, Uruguay’s housing agency, Agencia Nacional de Viviendas (ANV), is planning a pilot project to promote the use of wood in construction.

To support these initiatives, a delegation of Uruguayan ministry officials, along with representatives from the mechanical wood processing industry, traveled to Finland to explore forestry technology, sawmill solutions, and equipment for the country’s first CLT production facility.

Key Goals of the Visit

Technology & Equipment Acquisition – The delegation sought Finnish forestry technology for sawing, thermal wood processing, and CLT production to support the establishment of Uruguay’s first CLT plant.

Promoting Wood Construction – Uruguay’s housing agency, Agencia Nacional de Viviendas (ANV), is planning a wooden construction pilot, and Finland is a strong contender to provide expertise and solutions.

Industry Visits & Networking – The delegation visited Finnish sawmills, thermal wood processing facilities, and CLT factories, while also meeting with organizations promoting wood construction in Finland.

Strengthening Finnish-Uruguayan Collaboration

This visit reinforced Finland’s role as a key technology provider in Uruguay’s emerging wood construction sector, offering expertise in sustainable and innovative building solutions. The collaboration could pave the way for future projects in Uruguay’s growing wood-based construction industry.
