Chilean Wood Construction Delegation Visited Finland and Estonia

A Chilean wood construction delegation, consisting of five wood panel industry companies and six university representatives, visited Finland and Estonia in June 2019. The visit was hosted by technology suppliers Raute, TKM TTT, Lemtapes, and Hekotek, and included tours of plywood and LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) factories.

Purpose of the Visit

Chile is currently implementing various public and private initiatives to develop its wood industry, with a strong focus on wood construction. Finland, known internationally for its expertise in wood construction, attracted the Chilean delegation, which was co-organized by Corman (a sister organization of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation).

The visit aimed to:
✔ Learn about Finnish plywood and engineered wood product manufacturing technologies
✔ Gain insights into Finland’s advanced wood construction practices

Project leader Niina Fu emphasized:

”Chilean forest companies, developers, and universities are particularly interested in the production and use of engineered wood products, such as LVL and CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), in Finnish construction.”

”My expectations for this trip were fully met; it was fascinating to explore the manufacturing of wood panels, especially LVL, which is not currently produced in Chile. It was impressive to see how companies like Stora Enso and Metsä Wood are committed to advancing wood construction in Finland. We have much to learn, as Finland sees wood as a sustainable building material, and the country offers world-class technological solutions for our processes.”

”The week was a great success. The visits were conducted in a positive spirit, and we had open and extensive discussions about wood construction. It was valuable to meet world-class Finnish technology providers and gain insights into the production and use of engineered wood products in construction.”

Key Outcomes

The visit strengthened connections between Finnish and Chilean wood industry players, encouraging technology transfer, collaboration, and the adoption of sustainable wood construction practices in Chile.
